The Lincoln District Octopus mural was created as part of a collaborative flash mural Spaceworks project with 8 other artists, in order to activate the walls of Tam Anh Travel and Hong Kong Supermarket along S 38th street. Each artist was assigned a portion of the wall and had discretion over what they painted. The following artists participated in the project: Curtis Ashby, Devona Roy, Katrina Van Strien, Kami Huynh, Mary Mann, Lauren Iida, Devin Jansa, Mike Mckeogh, and Kaitlyn Lloyd.
Since I was assigned the section of the wall with a portion that was indented, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to paint something playfully crawling out of the area, while celebrating local sea life and maritime culture. For a bit of mystery, I hid images of a ship wreck and four sea creatures into the design using UV reactive paint that you’re able to see with a black light.
